PINE RIDGE CEMETERY HISTORY
The Township of Pickle Lake officially took over the administration of the cemetery in 1997. Prior to the Township taking over, there were two cemeteries at the crest of the hill along Pickle Lake Road. The one had previously been the Catholic cemetery and the other one was referred to as the Anglican cemetery, where all other non Catholic burials were made. Although they were known by the name of the church who normally buried their dead there, there was little care given to them, especially in the later years. Thus the care was given mainly by long time residents who had family or friends buried there. Because of no organized maintenance the grounds often looked very unkempt; dandelions took over, grave markers decayed and crosses fell over. Needless to say, no one took the responsibility to care for the grounds or to make it a respectful resting place for the dead.
The Cemetery Board chose to combine the two cemeteries into one and give it a new name. A contest was launched and suggestions for names were given by community members. When the names were reviewed, the Board chose the name Pine Ridge Cemetery as it was descriptive of the location and trees in the area of the cemetery.
To further develop the grounds, a parking lot was made between the two cemeteries, a lot of trees and underbrush removed, and grass seed was planted to enhance the aesthetics of the area. This was all done with mixed emotions from the community! Some residents were adamant that it was a disgrace and others were relieved that something was finally being done. Once the decision was made by the Board to proceed, the work began and each year the Board budgets for a few more improvements. After years of hard work, the cemetery is not only accepted as a respectful place but also many community members have voiced their praises for the changes.
